X-FACTOR
The boys entered UK’s 7th season of X-Factor in 2010. Even though it seems the boys have known each other for years, the boys all entered the competition as solo artists. None of the boys got through boot camp as solo artists, but the judges said they were too good to let go. They decided to let them stay in the competition if they formed a band.[1]
After the X-Factor’s boot camp the boys spent a lot of time at Harry Styles’ house, getting to know each other and singing some of their favourite songs around a camp fire. Harry thought of the name ‘‘One Direction’, and said he thought it would sound good when they called the boys on stage.
With Simon Cowell as ‘One Direction’s’ mentor the boys got all the way through the competition coming 3rd place against runner up Rebecca Ferguson and the winner Matt Cardle. After the show the boys signed a recording deal with Syco Records and they went on the contestant’s tour till April 2011.
AFTER THE X-FACTOR
After the X-Factor their final’s song “Forever Young” was put all over the internet and was the top video on YouTube. During the X-Factor tour the boys were also busy recording their first album that was coming along fast. “What makes you beautiful” was released as their first UK single in September 2011. The song got all the way to number 1 on the UK’s single’s charts. “Gotta Be you” was their last single released before the “Up All Night” Album came out in November 2011. It took 2nd place on the UK’s albums chart by selling more than 138,000 copies in the first week. After the album’s release they had the Up All night world tour in December 2011 and January 2012.
‘One Direction’ started to become hugely popular worldwide. The band signed a contract as the opening performance at Big Time Rush’s world tour in February and March 2012. Halfway through the tour with BTR they stopped at the 2012 BRIT awards as they won an award for The Best British Single for “What Makes You Beautiful”.
In North America the boys signed a recording deal with Columbia Records. The boys released “What makes You Beautiful” as the first US single and it got 28th on the billboards chart hot 100.
